Key Aspects
BDG were commissioned to undertake an integrated business and master plan for the redevelopment of the aging Somerset Aquatic and Recreation Centre. The outcome was that a more flexible facility with a wider variety of uses and services was required to meet the community’s needs. The project included a six lane 25m pool, play leisure pool, 50m outdoor pool, spectator seating, a hydrotherapy pool and leisure pool /spa, gymnasium, indoor sports hall, additional child care facilities, café / kiosk, multi-purpose meeting rooms and additional back-of-house facilities such as administration facilities, staff areas, plant rooms, change rooms and wet areas were also provided.
The building is also designed to incorporate ESD principles to minimise energy consumption across the building’s lifecycle to this end the incorporation of a sophisticated building management system with automated opening and closing windows assists in flushing the centre with fresh air during the day and purging air at night as required. High levels of natural light through extensive solar modelling reduced daytime reliance on artificial lighting and heating.
